After latest round of scandals for the embattled congressman, Ossoff questions if national Republican leadership will stick with Collins
Atlanta, Ga. — This morning, Senator Ossoff is raising a new question on how long it will take Majority Leader John Thune and NRSC Chair Tim Scott to cut bait on GOP U.S. Senate nominee Mike Collins’ collapsing campaign.
In a statement, Senator Jon Ossoff said: “When will John Thune and Tim Scott do the inevitable and drop known bigot Mike Collins? How many of his neo-Nazi associates must be exposed before Senate Republicans cut bait on his collapsing campaign? Because I assure you there are more to come.”
Ossoff’s question to Thune and Scott comes on the heels of new Washington Post reporting that exposed yet another white nationalist tie for the congressman and is “just the latest piece of bad press for the Collins campaign.” According to the Post, a former Collins staffer promoted swastika imagery and depicted himself in Ku Klux Klan robes as recently as June and July, and recently told the Post, “I do think that the white race contributes more to the world.” The Post also reported that Collins “did not respond to a question about whether he stood by” his previous endorsement of Parra’s work.
For months, Collins has to come under fire for his “close ties” to white nationalism, including that his office briefed Nick Fuentes and Richard Spencer, some of the most notorious white supremacists in America who attended the Unite the Right hate rally in Charlottesville, on its efforts to free a Holocaust denier from jail.
Collins’ U.S. Senate campaign has been plagued by a number of additional controversies, including a federal investigation by the House Ethics Committee into Collins for allowing his former chief of staff, who had been convicted of criminal battery, to illegally funnel thousands of federal tax dollars to a girlfriend who did no work for the office. The bipartisan Office of Congressional Conduct report detailed how “Collins refused to cooperate,” before formally recommending that the Committee on Ethics subpoena the congressman.
