Alliance for Retired Americans Endorses Jon Ossoff for U.S. Senate

Group points to Ossoff’s plans to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare and commitments to taking on price gouging by drug companies

This as seniors are leaving Trump and Perdue over their handling of the pandemic

Atlanta, Ga. — Today, the Alliance for Retired Americans endorsed investigative journalist and Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Jon Ossoff in his race against Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.), pointing to Ossoff’s plans to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare and ensure every Georgian has affordable, accessible health care.

The Alliance represents more than 4.4 million retirees, older Americans, and community activists — including more than 68,382 members in Georgia.

Nationally, Republican candidates have seen support from seniors dwindling from a backlash to the government’s failed COVID-19 response, which has left older Americans the most vulnerable to the pandemic.

Ossoff has vowed to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare and protect the programs from privatization, while Perdue has led the charge to cut them both, and has vowed to listen to scientists and medical experts in the face of the gravest public health crisis in a generation.

In 2019, Perdue called Social Security and Medicare “the problem” for driving up the national debt, and he recently reaffirmed to Georgians his goal of cutting Social Security. In 2015, Perdue was one of only 13 Senators who voted against a measure aimed at protecting Social Security from privatization, and he has also repeatedly voted for budgets that called for slashing funding for Medicare.

In their endorsement, Alliance for Retired Americans President Robert Roach, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer Joseph Peters, Jr., and Executive Director Richard J. Fiesta all pointed to Ossoff’s commitments to protecting older Georgians.

“Jon’s positions demonstrate a strong commitment to ensuring that all Americans have the  secure retirement they have earned. We welcome his leadership on issues such as strengthening and expanding Social Security and Medicare and protecting them from cuts,” Roach, Peters, and Fiesta said. “Our members support his candidacy because of his belief in more affordable health care, including lower drug prices, pension security, and quality long term care. The Alliance for Retired Americans believes that Jon’s election to the U.S. Senate will enhance the quality of life for older Americans.”

“Georgia’s seniors and retirees deserve a champion in the U.S. Senate who will protect their hard-earned Medicare and Social Security and protect them during a deadly pandemic that puts seniors most at risk. Senator Perdue downplayed the pandemic during critical months that put our seniors in danger by undermining public health experts and letting this virus spin out of control. I will empower medical experts during a health crisis, be truthful with Georgia’s seniors about threats to their health, and work to strengthen and protect Medicare and Social Security,”said Ossoff.
