Amidst President Trump’s outrageous effort to sabotage voting by mail during a pandemic, Ossoff demands Sen. Perdue defend his constituents’ voting rights
Ossoff: “Senator Perdue, take a stand for once”
Atlanta, Ga. — Today investigative journalist and Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Jon Ossoff called on his opponent, Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.), to denounce President Trump’s outrageous and blatant effort to undermine the United States Postal Service and sabotage voting by mail during a pandemic.
The USPS bipartisan Board of Governors has said the Postal Service needs $25 billion from Congress to ensure timely mail delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Democrats have pushed for that funding in coronavirus relief bills.
Trump admitted yesterday he wants to stop emergency funding for the USPS so that Americans cannot vote by mail, an outrageous assault on our democracy.
Yesterday it was reported that Trump and First Lady Melania Trump nevertheless requested their own absentee ballots from Florida.
The USPS also provides key resources for rural communities across Georgia, including delivering prescription drugs, Social Security checks, and other vital services that are out of reach for many — all of which would be at grave risk without additional funding.
“The President said he opposes Postal Service funding because he wants to undermine mail-in voting during a pandemic. Senator Perdue must denounce the President’s blatant and outrageous attack on election integrity, and he must publicly state his support for vital USPS funding during this public health emergency,” said Ossoff. “Senator Perdue, take a stand for once. You are sworn to the Constitution and the people of Georgia, not to President Trump. If you allow the President to sabotage voting by mail during this pandemic, history will condemn you for disenfranchising your own constituents and enabling an outrageous attack on the democratic process.”
