Ossoff Launches New TV Ad Blasting Sen. Perdue for Working to Gut Health Protections for Pre-Existing Conditions During the Pandemic

Perdue profited off the pandemic while publicly downplaying the threat and comparing it to the common flu while millions got sick

Now during the pandemic, Perdue still supports a lawsuit that could allow insurance companies to deny coverage to Georgians with pre-existing conditions

Atlanta, Ga. — Today, investigative journalist and Georgia Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Jon Ossoff launched his newest TV ad, titled “In The Middle,” blasting Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) for working to gut protections for Georgians with pre-existing conditions in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. Senator Perdue is well known to Georgians for brazenly profiting off the pandemic while downplaying its risks.

The ad blasts Perdue for continuing to support the Trump Administration-backed lawsuit set to be argued in front of the Supreme Court on November 10 that seeks to strike down the entire Affordable Care Act. Perdue reaffirmed his support for the lawsuit in July, months into the pandemic.

Should the law be overturned, half a million Georgians would be at risk of losing their health care, and vital protections for Georgians with pre-existing conditions from denial of coverage or price discrimination would no longer be in force.

Last month the nonpartisan fact checking outlet PolitiFact found Perdue was running a “false” TV ad about his record on pre-existing conditions, noting Perdue’s votes against the Affordable Care Act and his support for plans that “don’t have to cover the package of essential benefits” under the ACA and “can exclude coverage for preexisting conditions.”

The ad reminds Georgians that on the same day as a classified Senate briefing on the virus, Perdue purchased stock in a manufacturer of medical PPE and worked to profit off the pandemic.

At the same time he was working to line his own pockets, Perdue echoed President Trump in downplaying the virus by comparing it to the common flu, saying “we’ve had ordinary flu seasons with more deaths.”

A transcript of the ad is below:

[Ossoff]: “I’m Jon Ossoff, and I approve this message.”

[Narrator]: “Senator David Perdue profited from the pandemic, while he downplayed the risk —  undermining doctors and scientists — compared coronavirus to the common flu.

[Perdue]: “We’ve had ordinary flu seasons with more deaths.”

[Narrator]: “Now, even in the middle of this pandemic, David Perdue is trying to let insurance companies deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions like cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

“David Perdue: out for himself, not for our health.”
