[VIDEO] Ossoff: Trump Should Equip Schools to Meet CDC Guidelines, Not Cut Their Funding

Ossoff responds to President Trump’s threats to cut school funding and attacks on public health guidance

Ossoff: Congress, Administration should help local schools adapt to COVID-19 consistent with CDC guidelines

Ossoff: “We want to reopen schools as soon as it is safe to do so. We want to do it properly.”

Atlanta, Ga. — As President Trump threatens to cut funding for public schools and attacks CDC public health guidance for school reopenings, investigative journalist, media executive, and Democratic U.S. Senate Nominee Jon Ossoff insisted that school reopenings should follow CDC guidelines and demanded that Congress and the Administration equip schools to keep kids safe.

At Thursday’s “1 GEORGIA” virtual town hall, Ossoff said Congress should pass legislation to equip every school district in America for adaptation to COVID-19 so schools can implement public health practices that will protect students, teachers, and families.

The CDC recently issued school reopening guidelines, but rather than moving to help schools follow them, Trump attacked the CDC and has repeatedly threatened to cut funding for public schools that insist on meeting CDC guidelines before reopening.

During the town hall last night, moderated by Savannah Alderman Kurtis Purtee, Ossoff had a simple message“Listen to and follow the advice of our public health experts.”

“We want to open schools as soon as it’s safe to do so. We want to do it properly. We want to relieve parents of the burden of having to provide childcare in this uncertain situation. They need to go to work and the kids can’t go to school. We need to find a way to get kids back in school, but we need to do it consistent with public health guidelines,” said Ossoff.

Ossoff continued by noting that, “the President of United States decided that rather than, say, going to Congress and asking for the resources necessary to equip every school district across this country with the equipment and training necessary do this properly — he’s so lazy — he just sits in the White House and gets on Twitter and starts attacking the CDC for issuing its expert guidelines.”
