Atlanta, Ga — On the fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, Shanette Williams is “proudly and wholeheartedly” endorsing Sen. Jon Ossoff for re-election in honor of her daughter, Amber Thurman, a 28-year-old Georgia nurse and mother who tragically died after she couldn’t legally access the abortion care she needed.
In a statement endorsing Sen. Ossoff, Shanette WIlliams said, in part, “Since the passing of my daughter, Amber Thurman, Senator Ossoff has never forgotten the promises he made to my family. More importantly, his actions have consistently aligned with his words. He has shown sincere care and concern for my grandson, Messiah. He has taken the time to personally check on him, ask about his progress in school, celebrate his accomplishments, and encourage him through one of the most difficult periods of his young life. He even made time for a play date with my grandson—something no headline would capture and no political benefit could be gained from. Those moments reflect the heart of a man who genuinely cares about people.”
She continued, “Beyond his compassion, Senator Ossoff has been a strong advocate for expanding access to quality healthcare, protecting reproductive freedom, improving maternal health outcomes, lowering prescription drug costs, supporting voting rights, investing in education, creating economic opportunities for working families, and bringing federal resources back to Georgia communities. He has consistently worked to increase transparency and accountability in government while fighting for policies that improve the lives of everyday Georgians.”
“Georgia’s extreme six-week abortion ban – in effect, before many women even know they’re pregnant – continues to put Georgia women at grave risk. Shanette’s fearless advocacy after Amber’s death is an inspiration to the nation. Throughout his time in the Senate, Sen. Ossoff has fought to protect access to contraception and support families seeking IVF treatments. On the campaign trail, Sen. Ossoff has sounded the alarm on women’s health care emergency in Georgia. His GOP U.S. Senate opponent, Trump loyalist Mike Collins, is one of the most extreme opponents of abortion rights and supports banning abortion with no exceptions, even in cases of rape, incest, and when the mother’s life is at risk.
